Sacred system: Peter Evans in Coimbra

Image
Only four days left, before the inaugural set of the 2010 edition of Jazz ao Centro Festival, in Coimbra. Next Friday, Peter Evans’ music will flood Santa Clara-a-Velha monastery. Evans' solo performances are totally insane:  virtuosity and technique playing a tremendous fight against voice and aesthetic. “It takes a long time to realize that there’s no rules”, Peter Evans once said. But that could be exactly the only possible rule. His art lives somewhere from Louis Armstrong to John Cage, or in between Miles Davis and Luciano Berio. When he is improvising, listeners will get immersed on a turbulent flow of ideas and physical sensations. The acoustic process is powerful enough to transport you to a different psychological universe. Santa Clara-a-velha monastery seems to be the perfect gate-way to set up a sacred system, a mental process where everything as to be equated. Not to be missed! Jazz ao Centro , Peter Evans solo, Coimbra, May 28, 19h.

Mostly Other People Do The Killing. True, here in Portugal.

Image
New York’s Terrorist Be-Bop Uber-Jass Quartet or Mostly Other People Do The Killing ( MOPDTK ) as they use to be called, will play live in Portugal, this week. One concert in Lisbon and 3 nights in Coimbra. Not a melting pot, but fantasy salad well dressed with all possibilities of this all-time alive music called Jazz. Bebop combined with free improvisation, served by bassist Moppa Elliott , featuring Peter Evans (trumpet), Jon Irabagon (tenor saxophone) and Kevin Shea (drums). “ I like my jazz with some dirt on it, sometimes a lot of dirt ”. Quoting Moppa Elliott to assume that it’s our turn, now. We only have to clean our own ears using this elixir of virtuosity, irony and free creativity. A single sentence to define MOPDTK: “another kick in the nuts to jazz history”. The future is now. And “this is our Moosic”. Mostly Other People Do The Killing , live in Portugal: Lisboa, Culturgest , May 26, 21h30 Coimbra, Jazz ao Centro festival , May 27, 28 and 29, Salão Brazil...

Mário de Sá Carneiro, 120 anos

Image
Mário de Sá Carneiro , poeta da Geração d’Orpheu , nasceu em Lisboa a 19 de Maio de 1890, suicidando-se em Paris a 26 de Abril de 1916, poucos dias antes de completar 26 anos. Completaria hoje 120 anos. Caranguejola , poema dito pela grande Maria Germana Tânger. O som é mau e a imagem não é a melhor. Vale a pena esperar pelo minuto 2:47, para nos deixarmos envolver nas palavras com vida, ditas por Germana Tânger.

Iceland, Eyjafjallajökull - May 1st and 2nd, 2010

"So I saw all of these mediocre pictures of that volcano in Iceland nobody can pronounce the name of, so I figured I should go and do better. But the flights to get over took forever as expected (somewhat). 4 days after leaving I finally made it, but the weather was terrible for another 4. Just before leaving it got pretty good for about a day and a half and this is what I managed to get." Iceland, Eyjafjallajökull - May 1st and 2nd, 2010 from Sean Stiegemeier on Vimeo .
